Apple Pie Granola

Apple pie: the classic fall dessert, now brought to you in a nourishing, crunchy, and incredibly fun form! This Apple Pie Granola is guaranteed to be your go-to breakfast (or snack! or lunch! or dessert!) all fall long.


Last year around this time, I posted a Pumpkin Pie Granola and it seemed to be a big hit with you all. This year I'm staying with the same theme and sharing an Apple Pie Granola, which boasts the delightful combination of coziness AND crunch in the same package.

This granola has some major cozy fall flair. It makes me think of apple picking in October and of my grandma's homemade apple pie at Thanksgiving. It's loaded with warming fall spices like vanilla, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and allspice, giving it that classic apple pie taste and aroma.


What could you do with this granola?? The possibilities are endless! It's wonderful as a simple breakfast with your preferred milk or yogurt. I've been bringing it for lunch every day since it's easy to transport. We've even been having it for dessert, with some vanilla yogurt (and let's be honest... lots of caramel sauce). It would make for a really fun, special Thanksgiving morning breakfast, especially if you have visitors.

Because this granola gets most of its moisture and sweetness from a bunch (!!) of applesauce, it's a very nourishing treat whenever and however you enjoy it. There's only a quarter cup each of maple syrup and coconut oil in the whole batch, and no other added sweeteners or oils. Add in the pecans and apples and you have yourself a very nutritious granola.


Have you made your own granola before? If so, this one is going to be a bit different. The reason is that I really wanted to achieve a big, deep apple flavor, which simply cannot be rushed. You'll notice that this is a much wetter mixture because there's a whole bunch of applesauce in the recipe. If you're a homemade granola pro, you'll think it's too wet.

Have faith! Just like apples cook down for an hour or more to make a flavorful pie, you need to give the applesauce time to cook down and become delicious. Don't rush it! If you do, your granola will be bland and soggy, neither of which you want. It needs almost an hour in the oven (during which time your house will smell like cozy fall heaven). Keep a close eye on it and let it brown, but pull it out before the sugars in the applesauce start to burn.


I love making apple pie, but I usually do it only once or twice a season; I make a legit full-butter crust, and it's more of a special treat than a go-to. But this granola is a form of apple pie that you'll want to have all fall long because the ingredients are great for every-day.

Imagine Thanksgiving morning... a nice bowl of this with creamy vanilla yogurt and maybe even some sauteed apple slices?? Oh yes!

Thoughts About Ingredients
(These are just suggestions, since rogue is more fun than recipe)

  • 1 c unsweetened apple sauce
  • 0.25 c maple syrup
  • 0.25 c coconut oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 3 c old fashioned oats 
  • 2 tbsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp ginger powder
  • 0.5 tsp nutmeg
  • 0.25 tsp allspice 
  • 0.25 tsp salt
  • 0.5 c pecans. Either raw or pre-roasted is fine, but see details below for how to treat each option.
  • 1.5 c dried or freeze-dried apple slices. You have lots of options here. Many natural food stores sell dried apple rings in bulk. There are also some nice freeze-dried apple snacks, or you could do a mixture of the two.
  • 0.25 c crystallized ginger. Cut into thin slices or finely diced so it's not too overpowering! If you're very strictly against refined sugars, then you'll want to leave this out.
Thoughts About Method
(These are just suggestions, be creative and make it yours)
  1. Melt the apple sauce, maple syrup, coconut oil, and vanilla over low heat, then remove from the stove and cool until luke warm. This also works fine in the microwave.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the oats, spices, and salt. Pour the wet mixture over the top and mix well to combine.
  3. Spread the mixture across a large sheet tray; the more contact the oats have with the sheet tray, the more effectively they’ll brown.
  4. Bake at 350 for about ~50-60 minutes until the oats are evenly and lightly browned. Stir every 10-15 minutes.
  5. If using raw pecans, stir them into the granola after about 40 minutes.
  6. Toward the end of the baking time, keep a very close eye on the granola. You want it to be browned but not burnt. Don't take it out prematurely or it will be soggy!
  7. Cool completely by setting the sheet tray on a wire rack.
  8. If using pre-roasted pecans, add them now.
  9. Crush up the apple chips with your hands or dice them into bite-sized pieces, then add them to the granola. Cut up the crystallized ginger and add that as well.
  10. Store your granola in a sealed container to keep it crunchy! Make absolutely sure it's 100% cool before putting it in a container, otherwise it will lose its crunch.
