A Vibrant Avocado Papaya Salsa for Summer

If you'll be hosting or attending summer gatherings, this easy avocado papaya salsa definitely needs to be in your repertoire. Made from just five simple ingredients, it's the perfect appetizer on a warm evening.

In case you're wondering about papaya and avocado together, I can promise you that they're a match made in tropical heaven. My husband and I spend every winter on Kaua'i, the northernmost Hawaiian island, and both fruits grow abundantly there. I made this exact salsa at least once a week and we love enjoying a bowl of it on the beach alongside some rum cocktails. If this is your vibe too, I have a whole guide to tropical vegan recipes that I know you're going to love.

Thanks to its simple ingredients and refreshing flavors, this salsa is sure to be a hit at summer gatherings, beach picnics, seasonal potlucks, and even themed parties. Dunk into it with chips or scoop it into tacos; it will make you feel like you're sitting on a beach in Hawaii.

What is Fruit Salsa?

You might be surprised to see that I've called this a salsa, even though there are no tomatoes. But to me, "salsa" is a fresh, vibrant condiment or dip made from mostly-raw ingredients, typically with some herbs, aromatics, and/or spicy peppers. Although tomatoes are often used, I actually have a whole guide to fruit salsa (with no tomatoes), which will completely change your perception.

How to Make this Avocado Papaya Salsa

This tropical avocado salsa is very fast and easy. You'll just stir together papaya and avocado with some lime juice for brightness, some cilantro for freshness, and generous flaky sea salt. It takes about five minutes to make, especially if you have the papaya cleaned and prepared in advance.

Avocado Papaya Salsa Variations

There are a lot of ways you can change up this tropical fruit salsa to make it your own. If you can't find papaya, try using ripe mango or pineapple instead. If you're not a cilantro fan, it works great with fresh mint. If you like things spicy, sprinkle some cayenne onto the papaya and mix it very well before adding the other ingredients.

Ingredients and Substitutions

Here's what you'll need for this tropical avocado salsa recipe, as well as some thoughts, tips, and possible substitutions. If you make any substitutions, I'd love to hear about it in the comments section below.

  • Papaya. Choose one that feels slightly soft to the touch and smells fragrant.
  • Avocados. I like to make avocado salsa with avocados that are ripe but still a bit firm, a day or two shy of what I'd use to make guacamole. Choosing avocados that still have some firmness will help them to hold their shape.
  • Whole lime. You'll use fresh-squeezed lime juice to brighten up the salsa, and it also helps to keep the avocado from browning.
  • Cilantro. You can use regular cilantro if that's what you have access to. Or, for a true treat, use micro cilantro as I've shown in these photos. If you're not a cilantro fan, try using very finely chopped fresh mint.
  • Salt. This summer salsa will be most flavorful with an artisan flaky sea salt like fleur de sel or sel gris. If you have access to it, this recipe works wonderfully with alaea (a Hawaiian sea salt mixed with red volcanic clay).
