A Celebration of Tropical Vegan Recipes

Whether you're looking to freshen up your diet, host a themed party, or just bring some sunshine into your life, I'm excited for you to browse this guide to tropical vegan recipes. This post is a celebration of colorful and vibrant plant-based dishes featuring Hawaiian ingredients and tropical flavors. From exotic rum cocktails and party-friendly appetizers to nourishing salads and main courses, every one of these recipes is sure to make you smile.

Why tropical recipes? Most importantly, they're just plain fun. But beyond that, these flavors and ingredients are my own personal greatest love in the culinary world. My husband and I spend each winter on the northernmost Hawaiian island, and my interest in cooking was largely born from the amazing ingredients we have access to during our time on Kaua'i.

These tropical vegan recipes feature fresh and colorful fruits and veggies as the star. You'll find plenty of iconic Hawaiian ingredients like pineapple, avocado, macadamia nuts, and coconut. But you'll also discover some tropical pairings you might be less familiar with, like spicy papaya salsa and Hawaiian pineapple guacamole. Keep reading to find a rainbow of island-inspired recipes that I know you're going to love.

Spending winters on Kaua'i, the northernmost Hawaiian island, was my inspiration behind starting The Rogue Brussel Sprout blog. How could you not fall deeply in love with fruits and veggies when you're surrounded by nature's greatest gifts? To me, tropical cooking is all about celebrating the beauty of these special, nourishing ingredients.

What Are Tropical Recipes?

This tropical recipe round-up is my own personal interpretation of island ingredients and flavors. The recipes you'll find here don't subscribe to a specific cultural heritage. Instead, they exemplify how Hawaiian fruits, veggies, roots, and nuts can be used in a wide variety of unexpected ways. In order to honor the beauty of these ingredients, I try to treat them as simply as possible. Many of the dishes are raw or mostly raw.

All of these tropical recipes are entirely plant-based. Most are also gluten-free, many are grain-free, and all have plenty of ideas for customization. Although the majority of these tropical vegan recipes are decidedly on the healthier side, you'll also find some cocktails and treats.

This Rainbow Vegan Citrusy Slaw exemplifies how I approach tropical food. You won't find white wilted cabbage or heavy mayo dressing in this slaw; instead, I've taken the idea of a slaw and re-imagined it with colorful fresh veggies and a bright citrus dressing.

My Favorite Hawaiian Flavors

The overall vibe of the tropical vegan recipes in this guide is vibrant and bright. You'll see a lot of citrus (lime in particular), fresh fruit, raw veggies, and fragrant herbs like cilantro and mint. As a whole, the flavors are summery, beachy, clean, and simple.

Although some of these plant-based tropical recipes incorporate spicy or zesty flavors, those savory notes are always balanced by freshness. You'll find some spicy peppers, warming cumin, savory seaweed, and punchy ginger. You won't find rich or heavy sauces though, since I like to have the local produce as the star of the show, both visually and in terms of flavor.

The farmers' markets on Kaua'i are amazing. We go at least once a week. This is a typical farmers market haul for us: kale, cucumbers, numerous types of avocados, papayas, assorted citrus, ginger, and turmeric.

My Favorite Hawaiian Ingredients

You'll see a wide variety of beautiful Hawaiian ingredients in these island-inspired recipes. For fruit, keep an eye out for the iconic favorites (pineapple, mango, papaya) as well as some lesser-known beauties like kumquats and starfruit. Citrus in particular is always at peak while we're on Kaua'i, so you'll see an array of recipes with limes, oranges, and grapefruits.

For veggies, some of my personal favorites at our weekly farmers market are kale, cabbage, and cucumbers; I almost always leave them raw. Hawaii has also helped me fall in love with nutritious sea veggies, like nori.

For me, tropical cooking isn't just light fruits and veggies though. These Hawaiian vegan recipes get some richness and fat from avocado, macadamia nuts, and coconut. And of course we can't forget about a very important tropical ingredient: rum!

We have access to the most amazing avocados on Kaua'i. Every winter, we try to find as many different types as we can. I always have at least a dozen avocados at various stages of ripening at any given time. The avocados in Hawaii range from tiny to enormous, can have green, black, or purple skin, and can have soft or hard shells.

How to Enjoy Tropical Recipes

If you're someone who loves fresh and vibrant flavors, then these plant-based tropical recipes can easily become part of your everyday repertoire. Although there are an infinite number of ways you can enjoy tropical dishes, this is my personal favorite: a beach picnic! This is how my husband and I do date night while we're on Kaua'i. We love making a bowl of Hawaiian Tropical Fruit Guacamole and some tiki cocktails on the beach.
