A Mango Rum Punch for Summer Evenings

If you love tropical flavors, you're going to fall head over heels for this easy mango rum punch. Featuring sweet mango, tart lime, and a tiki-inspired combination of gold and dark rums, it's a perfect cocktail for outdoor parties and warm evenings. This mango cocktail is easy to make too, and uses just a few ingredients; there are no pricey liqueurs or hard-to-find components needed.

One of the reasons I love this mango rum punch is that it looks celebratory, yet is fast and simple to make. That means you can serve it at a party when you want some wow factor, but don't have to spend a bunch of time or money preparing it. Personally, although I enjoy drinking a complex rum punch with a bunch of ingredients, the reality is that I don't often enjoy preparing one, especially when we have friends over. This four-ingredient mango punch gives you all the tropical mango flavor without the effort.

Because my husband and I spend winters on the northernmost Hawaiian island, I'm a huge fan of both mango and rum. In fact, I have a whole guide to tropical vegan recipes, many of which feature these two iconic island ingredients.

What Is Rum Punch?

Although the term rum punch is very loose, it usually refers to a cocktail that combines rum (often multiple types) with a variety of fruits and sometimes other liqueurs. Rum punch tends to be complex in flavor, balancing strong, tart, sweet, and sometimes bitter components. There are many classic tiki rum punches, like my personal favorite the Zombie, that call for 10-12 ingredients.

Ingredients In This Easy Mango Rum Punch

I've specifically created this summer mango cocktail to be fast and easy so that you can enjoy it for outdoor parties, beach picnics, and while traveling. Although the flavors are less complex than classic rum punch recipes, it's still nicely balanced. The benefit of the streamlined ingredients is that you can grab everything you need at the store on the way to the beach!

To make this mango rum punch, you'll just combine mango juice (or a mango juice blend; see the notes in the ingredients section) for sweetness, fresh-squeezed lime for tartness, and gold rum. Shake it up, pour into a tiki glass filled with ice, and then top it with a dark rum float. The contrast of the two fruits, as well as the two rums, creates a refreshing mix of tropical flavors.

Mango Rum Punch Variations

If you're making this tropical cocktail at home and have a well-stocked bar, you can experiment with a few different additions. Try adding a quarter to a half ounce of passionfruit liqueur for more Hawaiian-inspired flavor, orange curacao for some dryness, or coconut rum for an especially beachy vibe. Mango and lime both go beautifully with a wide variety of tropical flavors.

Ingredients and Substitutions

Here's what you'll need for this mango rum punch recipe, as well as some thoughts, tips, and possible substitutions. If you make any substitutions, I'd love to hear about it in the comments section below.

  • Gold rum. Make sure you choose a rum that is golden-colored rather than dark, otherwise the vibrant hue of this mango punch will look muddy. I love to use the Gold Rum from Koloa Rum.
  • Mango juice. Depending on where you live, you'll have access to different options. This summer punch will be most flavorful if you can find freshly-pressed mango juice (also sometimes called mango nectar). However, if you live in a more temperate climate, you may only be able to find mango juice blends; in that case, look for an option with mango as the first ingredient and no added sugar. You might want to adjust the ingredient amounts to your own tastes based on the sweetness, thickness, and flavor intensity of the juice you use.
  • Fresh-squeezed lime juice
  • Dark rum. Again, Koloa Rum is my go-to. The combination of gold and dark is wonderful, but if you're only going to get one rum, I'd use all gold rather than all dark for the sake of the color.
  • Garnishes. I like to garnish this rum punch with mango slices and fresh mint; however you can omit the garnishes as needed, especially if you're making this for an outdoor party or picnic.
