A Tropical Açaí Matcha Latte

If you're craving island flavors, then you're going to love this açaí matcha latte. It's whimsical, colorful, refreshing, and packed with antioxidants, plus it's easy to make at home. There's no need to go to the pricey açaí bowl stand when you can whip up this tropical matcha latte in just a few minutes and for a fraction of the cost.

This açaí latte is unique because it incorporates a frozen açaí puree as the bottom layer. These powerful tropical berries add interesting flavor, a vibrant purple hue, and even more nutrition to your matcha ritual. The frozen puree helps to keep the latte especially cold too, so this is a perfect drink for a hot summer day.

Because my husband and I spend winters on the northernmost Hawaiian island, I'm a huge fan of açaí and of the island tradition of serving açaí bowls and shakes in beach-side shacks. In fact, I have a whole guide to tropical vegan recipes, although I'm excited that this is my first açaí recipe.

What is Açaí?

Açaí berries are a deep-purple berry harvested from the açaí palm tree. They're small and round, with a similar appearance to purple grapes, although the color is much deeper. Açaí palms are native to the Amazon and most cultivation occurs in Brazil. Açaí berries, in a pureed and frozen form, make frequent appearances through tropical regions and are often served as an ice-cream-like base in a bowl with toppings like fruit, nuts, and granola.

Açaí berries are a very nutrient-dense food, known primarily for their anthocyanins. These antioxidant properties often lead them to be called a "superfood". They're also rich in fiber, like most berries.

How to Make an Açaí Matcha Latte

This açaí matcha latte is easy to make and uses just a few ingredients. You'll start by blending up a packet of frozen açaí puree into a creamy texture, adding a dash of maple syrup or honey if desired. This forms the bottom layer of the açaí latte. Next, you'll add ice and then your favorite unsweetened plant milk to the glass, pouring it in gently to preserve the layers. Finally, you'll make the matcha shot by whisking together matcha powder and a dash of water, then add the matcha shot on top of the plant milk.

Açaí Matcha Latte Variations

This açaí latte can easily be customized to your own tastes. Feel free to use whatever milk you like, and to add a dash of maple syrup or honey to the açaí and/or to the plant milk. You can also blend half a ripe banana into the açaí for some sweetness and a creamier texture.

Ingredients and Substitutions

Here's what you'll need for this açaí matcha latte recipe, as well as some thoughts, tips, and possible substitutions. If you make any substitutions, I'd love to hear about it in the comments section below.

  • Açaí puree. Look for frozen açaí packets in the frozen fruit area of artisan grocery stores. Most are sold in four-packs.
  • Maple syrup or honey. Optional; you can add some sweetness to this tropical matcha latte if desired, especially since açaí can have an earthy flavor on its own.
  • Unsweetened plant milk. Feel free to use whatever milk you enjoy. Personally, I love to make vegan matcha lattes with unsweetened soy milk since it adds some protein and has a nice, rich texture. Other plant-based milks like cashew, macadamia, almond, or oat will also work fine, although the texture may feel less creamy.
  • Matcha. I adore Matcha Nude; use the code ROGUE to get 15% off your order.

Get my Favorite Matcha

Since matcha plays a starring role in this açaí matcha latte, you'll want to make sure you use a premium matcha that's bright green and has a delicate flavor with no grassy or bitter notes. My go-to is Matcha Nude; it's the only matcha I use at home and I recommend it so highly. Use the code ROGUE to get 15% off your order.

Closing Thoughts

Isn't this açaí matcha latte fun? I love that it feels fancy and indulgent, yet is packed with nourishing ingredients and an impressive dose of antioxidants. That means you can serve this latte at a celebratory summer brunch (I can guarantee everyone will be snapping photos!) and also enjoy it for everyday.

Because my husband and I spend winters on Kaua'i, Hawai'i, we're well-acquainted with beach-side açaí bowl stands. Although I love visiting them occasionally, an açaí bowl and a matcha are each about $10! With this recipe, you can save the açaí shack visits for special occasions, while still being able to enjoy this wonderful tropical ingredient as often as you wish.
